The Emanuel and Carol Parzen Prize for Statistical Innovation for 2024 has been awarded to IMS member Christian Genest, Professor of Statistics at McGill University, for his pioneering work in copula modeling, extreme-value theory, group decision-making, and nonparametric statistics. Active in research since the mid 1980s, he has developed models and techniques which have found applications in numerous fields, including finance, insurance, hydrology, risk management, and environmental science. His leadership in research earned him many accolades, including the Gold Medal of the Statistical Society of Canada in 2011, and the 2023 CRM–Fields–PIMS Prize recognizing exceptional achievement in the mathematical sciences. He is a Fellow of the IMS, the Royal Society of Canada, and various other institutions.
Established in 1994, the Parzen Prize is awarded in even-numbered years by the Department of Statistics at Texas A&M University to North American statisticians who have made outstanding and influential contributions to the development of applicable and innovative statistical methods.
The prize consists of a $1,000 honorarium and travel to College Station, Texas, to present a lecture at the prize ceremony which, this year, was held on October 25.
