Dr. Kathryn Roeder, Professor in the Department of Statistics at Carnegie Mellon University’s Dietrich College of Humanities & Social Sciences, is the recipient of the Twelfth Annual Janet L. Norwood Award for Outstanding Achievement by a Woman in the Statistical Sciences. She will accept the award at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

Dr. Roeder received her BS in Wildlife Resources from University of and her Ph.D. from the Pennsylvania State University. Immediately securing an Assistant Professorship at Yale University, the ladder of her success took her eventually to Carnegie Mellon University in 1998, where she holds the rank of Professor of Statistics & Lane Center for Computational Biology. Her research interests in theoretical and applied statistics are ground in an early fascination with basic biology. This translational interest in statistical genetics led to the use of mixture models methodology striving to explain the heterogeneity of nature. Roeder is an elected Member of the International Statistical Institute (’95); a Fellow of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics (’97); and a Fellow of the American Statistical Association (’97). The Committee of Presidents of Statistical Societies (COPSS) has twice honored her with the Presidents Award (’97) & the Snedecor Award (’97). A snapshot of activities over her career include board positions with the Institute of Mathematical Statistics; Advisor to both the FBI & NRC/NAS on DNA forensics and numerous Editorial positions in prominent journals.
