As well as receiving a MacArthur Fellowship, Lester Mackey (Microsoft Research, New England) has become the fifth Ethel Newbold Prize Winner. The Ethel Newbold Prize is awarded biennially to an outstanding statistical scientist in early or mid-career for a body of work that represents excellence in research in mathematical statistics, and/or excellence in research that links developments in a substantive field to new advances in statistics. The Prize Committee consisted of Gesine Reinert (Chair), Adrian Röllin and Susan Murphy. During the 63th ISI WSC in Ottawa, on July 20, 2023, Lester Mackey gave a lecture entitled “Advances in Distribution Compression.”
